MILWAUKEE — Groundhog’s Day is just around the corner.

And Milwaukee County Zoo’s resident groundhog, Gordy, is ready to make his 2023 weather prediction.

Will there be six more weeks of winter or an early spring? That’s the question on everyone’s minds.

Wisconsinites can catch Gordy’s prediction online on Feb. 2 at 9 a.m. via the Zoo’s Facebook page.

The event will be livestreamed from the Northwestern Mutual Family Farm and will be hosted by County Executive David Crowley and Zoo Director Amos Morris.

If it’s a sunny day, Gordy may see his shadow and return to his burrow for six more weeks of winter.

But if he doesn’t see it, that means an early spring to follow an already warmer than average winter.

Fun activities will also be available for those watching along. There are a few groundhog coloring sheets to choose from depending on Gordy’s prediction. You can download that here.

You can also play groundhog bingo. To do so, just download a bingo card on the zoo website. Then, follow along with the ceremony, marking off words as you hear the hosts say them. If you complete a bing, submit your card to zoo.specialevents@milwaukeecountywi.gov. A couple lucky winners will be chosen randomly to win groundhog-themed prizes.

Born and raised in Indiana, Gordy has become a favorite among zoo visitors. He’s turning 5 years old this year on April 6. He also loves to shred paper bags or newspapers to make a nest.

Here’s to hoping Gordy doesn’t see his shadow and that the dog days of winter are behind us.
