MILWAUKEE — Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a holiday that commemorates King’s birthday and his legacy.

From Milwaukee to Eau Claire, there are several events being held throughout the day to honor King.

Milwaukee area

Milwaukee Public Library's MLK Day 2023

The Milwaukee Public Library is hosting a full day of events, including activities and performances, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Martin Luther King Branch Library, located at 310 W. Locust St.

39th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration

The theme of the annual event is Working Toward a World of Peace. Student winners of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Speech and Essay Contest will deliver their speeches and read their essays from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Marcus Performing Arts Center.

Milwaukee Bucks’ Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Game

The Milwaukee Bucks will celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day when they host the Indiana Pacers at Fiserv Forum at 1:30 p.m.

The Bucks will host a nonprofit fair during Monday’s game on the upper concourse of Fiserv Forum. A variety of local nonprofit organizations will be set up at tables outside of Section 228 to share their missions with fans and provide information on future volunteer opportunities. The nonprofits scheduled to attend include 100 Black Men of Milwaukee, African American Breastfeeding Network, Groundwork Milwaukee, Public Allies Wisconsin, Safe & Sound and WestCare Wisconsin.

At halftime, the Bucks will recognize the 18 winners of We Energies’ annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Speech Contest.

Madison area

38th Annual City/County MLK Day Observance

The 38th annual Madison-Dane County MLK Day Observance will return in-person at the Overture Center for the Arts in the Capitol Theater. Donzaleigh Abernathy, King's goddaughter and daughter of Rev. Ralph Abernathy, is this year's keynote speaker. The program will also include presentation of the MLK Humanitarian Awards by Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway and County Executive Joe Parisi, performances by the MLK Community Choir, and more.

The event runs from 5:15 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

42nd Annual Tribute and Ceremony

The oldest official state celebration of King’s life returns to the Capitol Rotunda at noon. The theme is “Let Justice Rule.” Lawrence University President Dr. Laurie A. Carter is the guest speaker, and the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra is set to perform. The event is free and open to the public.

What is Your Life’s Blueprint? - 32nd Annual Fox Cities MLK Community Keynote

The 32nd celebration in Appleton will feature community activist Henry Sanders as keynote speaker. The event is sponsored by Lawrence University, United Way Fox Cities, Appleton Area School District, Boys and Girls Club of the Fox Valley, People of Progression and Covey and will be available online-only and run from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday via Zoom.

Eau Claire area

Martin Luther King Remembrance

The Pablo Center, in partnership with Uniting Bridges, UW-Eau Claire Department of History, and Converge Radio, will host guest speakers and live music to honor King. It is a hybrid event featuring guest speakers BJ Hollars and Selika Ducksworth-Lawton, music performances from Frank Watkins and Irie Sol, and more. Doors open at 5 p.m. and the program begins at 6 p.m.

MLK Day of Service, Learning and Celebration

Viterbo University will host a day dedicated to a variety of engagement opportunities from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., including food, workshops and a free keynote from author and speaker Dr. Andre Johnson.

2023 Celebration Wausau

The event runs from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and will feature a short presentation from Judge Everett Mitchell, followed by dance performances and poetry readings from local talents.

29th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration

The theme for this year’s celebration is “Recapturing The Dream to Make It a Reality.” The keynote speaker will be Elizabeth Rosiles-Zavala, Gateway Technical College director of Hispanic student programming. The program will also honor this year’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Award winners and feature performances by the Mitchell Steppers from the Mitchell K-8 School. It runs from noon to 1 p.m. and will also be live-streamed.
