What You Need To Know

  • Anyone will be able to fish in bodies of where there is an open season

  • However, they can't fish in sprint trout ponds during the Free Fishing Weekend

  • Officials said all other fishing regulations will still apply, including limits on the number and size of fish that anglers can keep

The Wisconsin DNR said anyone will be able to fish in bodies of where there is an open season. However, they can't fish in sprint trout ponds during Free Fishing Weekend.

"Free Fishing Weekend is a great opportunity for people from all walks of life to give angling a try, without the added step and expense of getting a fishing license," said Theresa Stabo, DNR Angler Outreach Program specialist. "Fishing is about so much more than the catch. Get out there and enjoy nature, spend time with friends and family, and if you’re lucky, bring home some fish for your next at-home fish fry.”

Officials said all other fishing regulations will still apply, including limits on the number and size of fish that anglers can keep. For those who plan to keep their fish, Wisconsin DNR encourages anglers to review the Safe Eating Guidelines.

While fishing during the winter, the Wisconsin DNR also reminded residents of these safety tips:

  • No ice is 100% safe. Anglers can check with local bait shops for ice conditions in the area they plan to fish. If questionable, stay on shore
  • Wear warm layers that are water-resistant
  • For the best traction, wear sturdy boots that are waterproof and have spike-style creepers
  • Bring an extra hat, gloves, rescue throw rope and gloves
