MILWAUKEE — Milwaukee’s Oriental Theatre Thursday night hosted a red carpet premiere for a new documentary called ‘The Flagmakers,’ which profiles the immigrants and refugees who work to make American flags at Eder Flag in Oak Creek.
“We were doing a nationwide search [to] find a flag factory that employed mostly immigrants and refugees, and we found the largest manufacturer of flags and flagpoles in the country,” Sharon Liese, one of the documentary’s co-directors, told Spectrum News 1. “There are amazing people there with amazing stories that really remind us of the hope of this country...”
The documentary enlisted some star power along the way. Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo signed on as an executive producer.
“We’re working with National Geographic and they’re owned by Disney+, and Disney+ had a project they were doing with Giannis,” Liese said. “They happened to let him know about our project when we were in the editing process, and he saw the film and of course is an immigrant himself and he’s from Milwaukee, and [he] apparently really liked the film and wanted to be part of it.”
