RHINELANDER, Wis. — A northern Wisconsin high school’s mascot was voted the best in the U.S.

According to Scorebook Live, a high school sports news website, the Rhinelander Hodag won the “Best High School Mascot in America” this week. More than 291,000 votes were cast.

The Rhinelander Hodags faced off against 11 other high schools throughout the country and ultimately received 183,455 votes. The Shelly Russets came in second place with 72,502 votes.

According to https://explorerhinelander.com/, a hodag is a mythical creature that was allegedly first spotted in the Wisconsin Northwoods in the 1800s. Some historians noted the Hodag resembles pictographs found near Lake Superior that depict Mishipeshu, the Ojibwe water panther.

The Rhinelander mascot was the only one from Wisconsin that made it to the championship.

The city celebrated the win on Thursday.
