MILWAUKEE — Milwaukee County Sheriff Earnell Lucas turned in his resignation, according to a Friday press release from the County Sheriff’s office.

Lucas said he will start a new job on Monday as at Fiserv as vice president of security for Wisconsin.

The County Sheriff’s office has yet to announce who will take Lucas’ place in the interim. Denita Ball is the lone candidate for the role on the Nov. 8 ballot.

Lucas served as the Milwaukee County Sherrif for four years, after being elected on Nov. 6, 2018. His last day in the role is Sunday. He’s spent 46 years serving in law enforcement and public safety, including 25 years with Milwaukee Police Department.

“It has been the high honor of my professional career to serve as Milwaukee County Sheriff,” said Lucas. “I thank the many friends and supporters of the Sheriff’s Office who placed their confidence and trust in me to deliver a high level of service to the people of Milwaukee County. I also thank the men and women of the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office who worked daily to restore honor, integrity, and trust to the agency. Together, we helped make Milwaukee County strong and safe.”

The sheriff’s staff oversees “safety and security at Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport, the Milwaukee County Circuit Courts, the Milwaukee County Jail and the Milwaukee County parks and freeway systems.”

As the vice president of security, “Lucas will be involved in every aspect of physical security, integrity investigations, and all other incidents impacting Fiserv,” an IT services management company based in Brookfield, Wis.
