MILWAUKEE — A string of false active shooter reports at various Wisconsin schools occurred Thursday, all of which have since been deemed false by authorities.
Officials confirmed at least 14 schools throughout the state received the threats:
- Rufus King International High School in Milwaukee
- Bradford High School in Kenosha, Wis.
- LakeView Technology Academy in Pleasant Prairie, Wis.
- Washington Park High School in Racine, Wis.
- Port Washington High School in Port Washington, Wis.
- Franklin High School in Franklin, Wis.
- Sheboygan South High School in Sheboygan, Wis.
- Green Bay East High School in Green Bay, Wis.
- Oak Creek High School in Oak Creek, Wis.
- Nicolet Union High School in Glendale, Wis.
- South Park Middle School in Oshkosh, Wis.
- Joseph A. Craig High School in Janesville, Wis.
- Park High School in Racine, Wis.
- Stevens Point Area High School in Stevens Point, Wis.
Dane County Clerk Scott McDonell shared an update from Dane County Emergency Management, which noted the calls to local police departments appeared to have been automated messages.
Wisconsin schools quickly went into action, either going into lockdown, sending messages to parents or similar actions. Although the threats were false, parents still had fear their children were in danger.
Renee Knepfel, a parent who has two children at Washington High School, said she started to receive texts from her daughter first, and then from her son about an active shooter and that the school was going into lockdown.
“It was very frightening," Renee said. "I was trembling and shaking, going to get my daughter."
Her son, Bobby, barricaded in the classroom.
"It was pretty scary to be in there and all of the people freaking out," Bobby said. "I feel really bad for a lot of people (who) seemed to take it a lot worse, I guess. A lot of people were really crying, and it was pretty bad."
Officials evacuated the students into the library, where parents were able to pick up their children.
Wisconsin schools weren't the only victims of the false threats. Schools in Missouri, California and Illinois received similar reports, known as "swatting."
In response to the threats, the Milwaukee Division of the FBI released this statement Thursday:
“The FBI is aware of the numerous swatting incidents wherein a report of an active shooter at a school is made. The FBI takes swatting very seriously because it puts innocent people at risk. While we have no information to indicate a specific and credible threat, we will continue to work with our local, state, and federal law enforcement partners to gather, share, and act upon threat information as it comes to our attention. We urge the public to remain vigilant, and report any and all suspicious activity and/or individuals to law enforcement immediately.”
