WISCONSIN — As temperatures continue to drop around the state many Wisconsinites are grabbing their winter gear out of their closets.

But not everyone has a coat to grab.

There are organizations around the state organizing coat drives for those in need. Here’s how to donate and where to get warm clothing if you need it.

Remember, if you do not see your hometown listed below, you can call 211 for information and community resources, for free, 24/7. The number also has a website where you can locate the nearest winter clothing drive. 

Milwaukee

The Salvation Army of Milwaukee County: Coats for Kids 

What you need to know to donate:
The Salvation Army accepts new or gently used coats for kids and adults. The group also collects new hats, mittens and scarves, as well as monetary donations.

What you need to know to collect:
To pick up a coat, you need to make an appointment. Appointments are available Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. now through Oct. 26. From Nov. 3-18, appointments can be made on Thursdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. There will be an additional distribution day on Saturday, Nov. 5 from 9 a.m. to noon.

One Warm Coat 

What you need to know to donate:
One Warm Coat accepts gently worn or new coats without holes or stains. Those in the Milwaukee area can drop off donations at various locations including Lands’ End - Fox Point (8777 N. Port Washington Rd., Fox Point) and Lands’ End - Brookfield (17925 Blue Mound Rd., Brookfield). Donations at Lands’ End locations can be made during store hours. Anyone who donates will receive 50% off a new coat.

Detail Doctors at 1334 N Van Buren St. in Milwaukee accepts donations from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays.

Brooks Brothers at 20111 W Bluemound Rd., Brookfield also accepts donations through Nov. 16.

What you need to know to collect:
One Warm Coat distributes donations to local nonprofits. To find one near you, click here.

Milwaukee nonprofits include Milwaukee Rescue Mission, Guest House of Milwaukee, Serenity Inns, Kids Matter, Auer Avenue Community School, Joyce’s House of Milwaukee Inc. and Rooted in Milwaukee Inc.

Madison

What you need to know to donate:
One Warm Coat accepts gently worn or new coats without holes or stains. You can drop off donations at Lands’ End - Madison, located at 209 Junction Rd., Madison. Donations are accepted during store hours.

Anyone who donates will receive 50% off a new coat.

Madison nonprofits include the Salvation Army of Dane County and the Salvation Army - Madison. 

Community Action Coalition: Winter Glow 

What you need to know to donate:
Winter Glow accepts monetary donations, but also has an Amazon Wishlist, where donors can send a coat and other warm winter gear directly to the coat drive. 

What you need to know to collect:
Community Action Coalition is hosting times for people to come collect coats on Oct. 27 and 28 from noon to 6 p.m. each day at 1902 Wright St., Madison. Register here. 

Green Bay

Green Bay Salvation Army: Coats for Kids 

What you need to know to donate:
New and gently used coats are being collected now through Oct. 27. Find a drop off location, here

What you need to know to collect:
Coats can be picked up at The Kroc Center at 1315 Lime Kiln Rd. on Nov. 5 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Green Bay Salvation Army requires pre-registration to collect coats.

La Crosse

La Crosse Salvation Army: Coats for Kids 

What you need to know to donate:
New and gently used coats are being collected now through Nov. 11. Coats can be dropped off at The Salvation Army at 223 N. 8th Street, La Crosse, or at Kwik Trips in La Crosse, Onalaska, West Salem, Stoddard and La Crescent.

What you need to know to collect:
Distribution Day will take place Friday, Nov. 18 at the Salvation Army warehouse (434 Nelson Pl., La Crosse) from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Those in need are asked to register for the event, here

Any remaining coats will be available for pick up at Catholic Charities’ clothing closet. 

Eau Claire

The King’s Closet 

What you need to know to donate:
New and gently used boots, hats, mittens, scarves, coats, snowsuits and blankets are being collected by The King’s Closet (310 S. Barstow St., Eau Claire) during business hours. Each donor is asked to limit donations to five boxes or bags per visit.

What you need to know to collect:
Those in need can collect donated items at The King’s Closet (310 S. Barstow St., Eau Claire) on Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Wausau

What you need to know to donate:
Donations of new and gently used coats, hats, boots, mittens, gloves, snow pants and scarves can be dropped off at a range of locales, including:

Donations are accepted through Oct. 31. Used coats will be dry cleaned by Gunderson Cleaners before they are distributed to those in need.

What you need to know to collect:
Those in need can pick up coats at The Salvation Army, Wausau, on Nov. 4 from 2 to 6 p.m. Plan to arrive no later than 5:45 p.m. Another distribution day will take place on Nov. 5 from 8 to 10 a.m. Plan to arrive no later than 9:45 a.m.

Remaining coats will be distributed all winter. Contact The Salvation Army, Wausau, for availability.
