MILWAUKEE — Milwaukee residents can start raking their leaves into curb lanes beginning Oct. 1. The City of Milwaukee Department of Public Works said they’ll start collecting leaves on Oct. 17. Residents can continue raking out leaves until Nov. 15.

However, if the season leaf dropping is delayed, DPW said they’ll extend the deadline to give residents more time to clear their property of leaves.

When the city establishes the official deadline, they’ll do one last sweep to collect leaves. Residents are encouraged to get their leaves out by the deadline.

In the wake of this year’s collection, DPW offered residents a few tips.

DPW said residents should leave a 1-foot gap between the leaves and the curb. This will help ensure that equipment can collect all the leaves. It also protects the equipment from damage and prevents flooding, as it allows storm water to move into the drains.

In general, DPW said to make sure you keep your piles away from the sewer grates, storm drains, and low-hanging trees.

If you’re also raking up other yard debris — such as flowers, garden trimmings and weeds — make sure you put that on top of the leaves.

However, there are certain things that you should not include in these piles. That includes grass clippings, pumpkins, litter or bagged material.

Brush can still be collected but should be put in a separate pile between the curb and the sidewalk. You’ll also need to call 286-CITY or request brush collection online.

If it’s already past the collection deadline, you can still get rid of your leaves and other yard debris. All you have to do is take them to a Drop-Off Center. You can take up to 6 cubic yards without having to pay a fee.

Leaves and brush cannot be placed in garbage or recycling bins, as they’re banned from landfills. When DPW collects it, they’ll compost it, which conserves natural resources and saves the city money.
