MILWAUKEE — Mexican Fiesta kicks off Friday at the Summerfest grounds and dozens of vendors are gearing up for the weekend.

Tens of thousands of people are expected to visit the Mexican Fiesta celebration. For one local family business, it’s the highlight of their year.

The Gonzales family has a long history at Mexican Fiesta. Jose Gonzales and his sister Maritza Gonzales came each year when they were growing up; they even danced at the festival as kids.

But this year they’re attending as a food vendor, known as Mazorca Corn, with their family.

“It’s hard work, but our parents have honestly been very hard workers and have instilled that gift in us,” said Maritza Gonzales.

Mazorca Corn was started by Jose and Maritza’s parents, who immigrated to the U.S.

Now, it’s a family affair, with three generations of their family working at the events they attend.

“They love the idea of buying local Wisconsin sweet corn, and then preparing it in a Mexican street style and serving it to the people of Milwaukee,” Jose Gonzales said.

They have nearly 4,500 ears of corn that were all locally grown in Wisconsin. Then, they top it with butter, mayo, Tajin, red pepper and much more. The family said they are proud to be here and love celebrating their culture.

“It honestly gives me goosebumps. It’s so exciting. Just living the culture through food, through activities, through music, through dance — it’s a very fun weekend, one we look forward to,” Maritza Gonzales said.
