MILWAUKEE — A new report from AAA's Foundation for Traffic Safety shows a troubling number of Americans are on the road too soon after taking potentially impairing doses of medication, with many not knowing that they or others are at risk because of it.

"We found that about half of Americans take some sort of potentially impairing medication, whether that's prescription or over-the-counter every day," Nick Jarmusz with AAA said. "About half of them get behind the wheel while using that medication— that's very concerning."

The study also showed that many drivers who are putting both themselves and others at-risk haven't received or read any warnings ahead of time, with the report indicating that drivers were 18% less likely to get behind the wheel after learning about their medication's potential side effects.

"This is an issue that does kind of fly under the radar, especially in relation to alcohol or illicit drugs," Jarmusz added. "Prescription and over-the-counter medications can also have the same type of cognitive, impairing effects."
