GREENDALE, Wis. — Communities across Wisconsin have been left figuring out what to do after severe weather threats scrapped many fireworks displays on the Fourth of July.

While many cities and towns cancelled plans outright, others decided to reschedule.

In Greendale, just southwest of Milwaukee, the fireworks show was rescheduled for July 5, however, another day of severe weather threats canceled that show as well. Undeterred, Greendale rescheduled for Saturday, July 9.

With clearer skies in the forecast, people around the village are excited to have the show take place.

Perhaps nobody is more excited the Thomas Casper of Casper Pyrotechnics. Casper has been contracted to create and run the fireworks show for the village.

“I love it, have loved fireworks all my life, I am beyond addicted, I take such passion in this,” said Casper as he inspected the display set up.

Casper said while it was disappointing that the show needed to be rescheduled, he is glad the village made the call early.

He said for safety reasons having to stop a fireworks show in the middle is nearly impossible.

“Once you start loading live shells then to remove them is very very dangerous so it is almost like we would shoot the show up in an instant and it wouldn’t exist,” said Casper.

Greendale Fire Chief Kenten Kais said it was a tough call postponing the shows, but knows he and others in the community made the right call.

“With wind over ten miles per hour that affects the safety zone," said Kais. "Once the fireworks are up in the air with that strong of wind the landing zone is compromised so it was best in our interest to cancel that night."

While rescheduling multiple times has created a few logistical headaches, Kristin Jastroch, PR Director for the Village of Greendale, said there may be a silver lining.

With many other municipalities canceling shows, it may drive more people from well outside Greendale to Saturday’s show. In addition, Jastroch said it will complement other events already taking place in town.

“We have our Farmers Market, Garden Gazing Walk, Gazebo Show and lots of restaurants and bars around Greendale,” said Jastroch. “Having our fireworks display on a Saturday night we hope all Greendale residents as well as so many people from surrounding communities will come check Greendale out."

The fireworks show will take place outside Greendale High School on Saturday July 9. For more information about the show, you can visit the Greendale Celebrations Facebook page here.
