BELGIUM, Wis.—The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is helping kids get their first fishing experience for the "Free Fishing Weekend."

In Ozaukee County, families came out to Puckett Pond to fish Saturday. 

With the bait attached, David Smiley-Robbins taught his daughter, Elia, to cast the line.

“She’s caught five fish today so far. She’s doing a great job. She’s a natural,” said Smiley-Robbins

Smiley-Robbins said he always had fond memories of fishing as a kid.

He hopes coming out to Puckett Pond will do the same for his children.

“It’s a great experience for not only my daughter but all kids because when they have a positive experience at fishing the first couple of time out, I think it really gets them hooked in a way,” said Smiley-Robbins.

The Free Fishing Weekend in Ozaukee county is a partnership between the Wisconsin DNR and the Grafton Youth Hunting Association.

Tony Young, Wisconsin DNR's conservation Warden, said the fish in Puckett Pond were really aggressive this weekend.

“We got a fish identification station where you talk the different species and talk about being safe around the water and then the other we have is a tackle demonstration where we have a bunch of different equipment that you need to be successful in fishing,” Young explained.

For Smiley-Robbins, it was important to get his kids unplugged from electronics, even if it’s only for a little while.

“When I was a kid, I didn’t have those things so I was always outside, playing in the woods and fishing and look at that, great job honey. It’s having them connect with the world we live in,” said Smiley-Robbins.

Smiley-Robbins said he sees this as a chance to reel in a few more memories with his kids before the day is over.
