RACINE, Wis.— Gun violence has become a growing problem in Racine. In the wake of Thursday’s shooting at Graceland Cemetery in which two people were shot, as well as other incidents in recent months, it has become a point of concern for area residents.
Shayla Malone is one person who said the recent uptick in violence worrisome.
"It is very concerning as a Racine resident; I have children that go to school in the area,” said Malone, as she ate lunch Friday at Main Street Project and Cafe.
While there may not be easy answers when it comes to stopping violence, Malone said she believes curbing crime can start with parents and guardians.
“I think it starts at home, having individuals loving on their kids, speaking positivity to them, let them know they can be somebody when they grow up,” said Malone.
When it comes to addressing crime, Charlie French with Racine Neighborhood Watch said being willing to report suspicious activity or information about crimes can be key.
“That may be the last piece of the puzzle that puts it all together,” said French. “It may be insignificant to you or you don’t think its a big deal but it very much could be that last piece of information and you can get some results with solving that crime."
Racine Neighborhood Watch said it wanted to remind Racine residents they can remain anonymous when reporting crime to law enforcement.
