SLINGER, Wis. — The Washington County Sheriff’s Office said it issued an "all-clear" after responding to reports of a student with a gun at Slinger Middle School.

Jim Curler, assistant superintendent of Slinger School District, said a student at Slinger Middle School said they had a gun. Multiple students told their teacher.

The middle school then went into lockdown. Curler said the school contacted local law enforcement.

There was a large police presence at the school; Slinger Police Department, Washington County Sheriff's Department, Hartford Police Department, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Department of Natural Resources, Slinger Fire Department and Lifestar all responded, according to Curler.

Slinger High School and Slinger Elementary School also were on lockdown earlier Friday afternoon.

Curler said the situation was investigated and the student, who has not been named, was identified.

"Thankfully, the student was identified relatively quickly and admitted to making this incredibly inappropriate statement. The student is facing consequences from a variety of entities," Curler said.

According to the sheriff's office, a suspect was taken into custody. The sheriff’s office said there are no injuries, and a gun was not located. They concluded their search Friday at approximately 1:50 p.m.

Curler said both local law enforcement and school staff conducted a search of the school and did a safety check, accounting for every student at Slinger Middle School.

The sheriff’s office intitially directed parents to Kettle Marine Bowl at 1021 E. Commerce Blvd., Slinger, Wis. for reunification. Those parents were escorted to the middle school by Wisconsin State Patrol at 2 p.m.

Any other parent wishing to pick up their child was directed to go directly to the middle school and meet at the school's lower parking lot, per the sheriff's office. Parents gave students' names to a school official at the front of the school. That official relayed names to teachers inside the school. Parents were being let in one by one to reunite.

The middle school remained open for the rest of the school day for students who wanted to finish classes, according to the sheriff's office.

School will be in session next week. Slinger schools start summer break June 8. Curler said counseling staff is available at all Slinger schools if any students need "assistance in dealing with this or any situation."

In an email to parents, Curler urged parents to discuss the event with their students.

"Parents, please take a moment to discuss this situation with your child. Let them know that some things can never be said even in a joking manner," he said in an email. "Please also thank them for the way they handled themselves during this stressful time. I could not be more proud of the students and staff at Slinger Middle School and the entire district."
