Chippewa County Coroner Ronald Patten on Thursday confirmed Peters’ death was a homicide in the autopsy report.

A 14-year-old boy has been arrested in her death.

The teen, only identified with the initials C. P. B., appeared virtually in court Wednesday from a juvenile detention center, where the court ordered a $1 million cash bond.

Chippewa County District Attorney Wade Newell said after the hearing that three charges were filed against the boy, including first-degree intentional homicide, first-degree sexual assault and first-degree sexual assault of a child under age 13 resulting in great bodily harm.

“Protection of community also is necessary in this case given his statements regarding his intentions and his statements regarding that when he did get off the trail, he punched the victim in the stomach, knocked her to the ground, essentially strangled her, hit her with a stick, before strangling her to the point of death — before he then sexually assaulted her,” Newell told the judge at the bond hearing.

Law enforcement in Chippewa Falls said Peters’ body was found in a wooded area Monday morning after she was reported missing Sunday night.

The Chippewa Falls Police Department said Peters’ father called 911 around 9 p.m. Sunday after she did not return from a visit to her aunt’s home.

A judge set a May 5 status hearing in the homicide case.
