DELAFIELD, Wis. — A Wisconsin man opened up his own museum to highlight the many battles of the Civil War.
Inside the Civil War Museum of Delafield are maps that lay out the dozens of battle from the Civil War. It may be hard to believe, but the entire exhibit is from one Wisconsin man’s collection.
Bob Brown’s passion for the Civil War started when he was a little kid. Over the years it’s grown to a major hobby of it that he is now hoping to share with the public.
“I was fascinated visiting these battlefields and seeing the ground over which these men cared and men read at cannons and rows of muskets. How could you do that?” Brown said.
Brown began visiting battle fields and collecting books and maps for the past ten years or so.
His collection was now overflowing. So, he decided to create a museum to showcase his collection and spread the history to the younger generations.
On one of the walls, Brown hand-painted a map laying out the many battles fought in the Civil War. It’s a late feature in the museum.
“Once I got this thing all drawn up and filled in I realized I have all these walls and this is a great place to spread out all my maps,” Brown said.
On the walls are maps showcasing just a handful of the many battles of the Civil War, showing how each one went and how they could have been.
“This museum is a military museum. It’s strictly to discuss the military strategy. The strategy of the north, the strategy of the south. The tactics of how they are going to win this war,” Brown said.
Brown put a lot of work into creating this museum hoping many in the community would come to take in the sights and learn.
“I’m not here to make money. I’m here to pass on what I know to others,” Brown said.
It’s a passion of his that he is now able to share with the rest of the community. He said it means the world to him.
The museum is free to visit and Brown says they are welcoming school's and anyone else who would like to come and learn.
