MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin Veterans Museum has a new exhibit open that features veteran artists.

Throughout the Wisconsin Veterans Museum are 24 new pieces of art made by veterans. But what makes it even more special is that it was curated by a local veteran who is also an artist.

Yvette Pino is an Army veteran who’s always had a passion for art.

“I’ve been an artist since I could hold a pencil and I am also an Army veteran. So I did paint murals while I served with the 101st Airborne Division,” Pino said.

Her work has led her to the Wisconsin Veterans Museum as the curator of art and she’s spent time putting together a new exhibit of all veteran art.

“It comes naturally to me to talk about artists who served in the military,” Pino said.

The new collection highlights veterans who created art during each conflict.

Sharing their viewpoint during each era.

“These individual elements start to take on an object that he may have encountered while he had his time in service,” Pino said.

For Pino, being able to share artwork by veterans that tells in-depth stories is something special to her.

“This is something special because when you go to World War II you will see artwork from an artist that served in that era,” Pino said. “But the artwork isn’t necessarily about that war.”

Pino is also a part of the new exhibit. She has her own piece of art in the collection.

“It’s an honor to hold this legacy,” Pino said. “I went to the University of Wisconsin Madison so that connection is really big to me to be a representation of the Midwest matrix is really huge.” Pino said.

She can sit alongside iconic artists who all have a Wisconsin tie. The exhibit allows these artists to tell their stories through art for all to enjoy.
