MILWAUKEE— Democrats in Wisconsin were likely celebrating the Wisconsin Supreme Court's redistricting decision late Thursday, but while it may be "a" win when it came to the battle over voting maps in the Badger State, it's not "the" win Democrats initially set out for.

"The way to think about it is that Republicans won the war over redistricting," Dr. Anthony Chergosky, a political science professor at the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse, said. "But the Democrats won a key battle here."

The legislative and congressional redistricting maps were submitted by Democratic Gov. Tony Evers and accepted by the court in a 4-3 ruling. The maps, which the courst said required the "least change," featured 55 GOP Assembly seats and 44 Dem districts. Former President Donald Trump won in 62 of the 99 Assembly districts statewide in 2020.

The Senate map included 20 Republican seats and 13 Democratic districts. Trump won in 22 of those Senate districts in 2020.

Justice Brian Hagedorn wrote the majority opinion after siding with the court's three liberal justices.

"Brian Hagedorn was elected with the support of Republicans— he was viewed as a conservative," Chergosky added. "I still do consider him a conservative but he is definitely a swing vote."
