FOND DU LAC, Wis.— A Wisconsin veteran is reliving his service to our country through song, after songwriters from Nashville came to the Badger State for a unique collaboration.

We all know the saying "a picture is worth a thousand words," but what is a song worth? Well, for one World War II veteran its worth a lifetime of memories.

World War II veteran Bob Plummer paged through history as he looked through old photo albums. It’s history he’s lived first hand: They are the days he spent serving in World War II as a first class flight engineer, some of his fondest memories.

Those memories he holds so dear are now encapsulated in a song. It was all possible thanks to Operation Song, a group that empowers veterans through the process of songwriting. They take their lived stories and turn them into songs with the help of famous songwriters. 

“It’s important for people to hear these stories understand what their sacrifice and service entails. And who is doing it and what they have sacrificed and the rewards they get from it,” Operation Song founder, Bob Regan said.

Plummer is now able to hear his life story put into a song. It’s been an emotional and whirlwind process.

“I still can’t fathom it. All this is beyond me. The people who set this up and the people who did this are amazing,” Plummer said.

The song is written from the perspective of his late wife who he lost a few years ago. It’s titled “Fly Boy,” something she used to call him.

His story is brought to life with a catchy tune and it’s something his family can hold on to and share for many years to come.

“This whole thing is incredible. It’s amazing. I can’t wait to show it to all my friends,” Plummer said.

Listening to the song was a proud moment for this veteran who scarified so much. Plummer will now be known by many as “Fly Boy.”
