LAKE GENEVA, Wis. — Some amazing sculptures are being carved in downtown Lake Geneva, but these ones aren’t made of marble or bronze. Instead, these towering figures have been created entirely of snow.
The U.S National Snow Sculpting Championships are underway. Teams from around the country have three days to build a complete piece, which requires a lot of prep work and precision to make the elaborate designs come together.
Mike Martino is a part of Wisconsin Team USA and has been snow sculpting since the 1980s. He said getting to enjoy the process never gets old.
“When you have worked hard at something, and you see it come together before your eyes, you feel like that is great," said Martino. "It is starting to work, [I'm] starting to feel it."
While the sculptures will eventually melt away, Martino added there is something powerful about being able to create something so quickly.
“In a few days, you can end up with a monumental sculpture, and you can’t do that with too many more materials,” said Martino.
The snow sculptors have until 1pm Saturday to finish their pieces, then judging will begin.
You can check out their progress during Lake Geneva’s Winterfest which runs now through Sunday.
