OSSEO, Wis. — Multiple vehicles were involved in a large car crash on I-94 early Thursday in Wisconsin, according to the Wisconsin State Patrol.

The crash occurred around 5:45 a.m. on I-94 at mile marker 96 in Jackson County, south of Osseo.

Lt. Tim Weiberg, with the State Patrol’s Northwest Region, said the initial reports of more than 100 vehicles being involved were overinflated. Initial traffic backups could have made it seem like there were more cars involved.

Weiberg added there were about 40 to 50 vehicles involved and about 20 of them were semis. All of those vehicles were in the general vicinity of the initial crash. There were a number of secondary crashes in the same area of the interstate, but they were spaced out from the original incident.

Mayo One Ambulence's Kirk Gunderson was helping to coordinate the emergency response. He said there were 21 ambulences on the scene or staged to go to the scene. Gunderson estimates about 15 to 20 people were taken from the scene either to hospitals or a triage location seet up at the Osseo volunteer fire department.

According to Weiberg, there have been no fatalities, although it is not clear how many people sustained injuries.  A spokesperson at Black River Memorial Hospital in Black River Falls said they treated two patients in the Emergency Department and they are both in stable condition.

Wisconsin State Patrol said earlier that the accident was caused by freezing rain that lead to icy and hazardous road conditions in the early morning.

Right now, EB I-94 is still closed from Co. HH at Foster to WIS 121 at Northfield.

Motorists advised to go to 511wi.gov for road conditions before traveling.
