MILWAUKEE — One week after the first of nearly 13,000 Afghan refugees began to move across the country to their new homes, some of the roughly 400 set to remain in Wisconsin have started the process of moving away from Fort McCoy.

"As of today, we have begun to do that," Karmen Lemke, director of Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Green Bay, told Spectrum News 1's Jason Fechner on Monday. "We have folks arriving in Green Bay and we are assisting them from Day 1 to help them meet their basic needs and get them settled."

While hundreds of soldiers at Fort McCoy continue to help care for the refugees before they're resettled in communities across the country, Lemke called it an honor to be able to help them move on after going through so much.

"It's quite humbling to meet them, greet them [and] welcome them," Lemke added. "I actually was able to meet a few in person— the words were few that we've exchanged, but it's really warm and welcoming to let them know that we're here to work with them, and they've been through a lot..."
