MILWAUKEE— The political dominoes have started to fall in Milwaukee's City Hall which current Common Council President Cavalier Johnson hopes will end with him elected to succeed current Mayor Tom Barrett for years to come.

"Absolutely, 100%, yes sir— I will run for mayor," Johnson told Spectrum News 1 on Thursday.

The first of those dominoes fell on Wednesday, when Mayor Barrett confirmed that President Joe Biden has nominated him to become the next ambassador to Luxembourg.

Pending Barrett's confirmation by the United States Senate, city ordinance would then have Johnson serving as both Common Council President and acting mayor until residents elect a replacement for Barrett in a future special election on a still-to-be-determined date.

"There certainly are changes that I would endeavor to make," Johnson said. "I've got a whole life experience that's different that Tom's. I think I would govern differently than Tom has as well and there are some changes that I would make, too, but I'm not focused on those things right now. I'm focused on doing my job as Common Council President, and when the time comes, to be focused on those responsibilities that will be before me as acting mayor."
