MILWAUKEE— In a letter to Milwaukee Public School families, Keith Posley, MPS superintendent of schools, said that all MPS schools will be open for in-person learning five days a week for the 2021-22 school year.

What You Need To Know

  • MPS schools will be open for in-person learning five days a week for the 2021-22 school year

  • Those who choose to return to in-person classes will be required to wear face masks on school properties and maintain social distancing practices

  • Virtual enrollment is available

  • Athletics and before- and after-school care return in the fall as well

MPS will continue to offer virtual schooling for students if they choose to partake in remote learning instead. In July, children and families who are interested in remote learning will be contacted to continue the enrollment process.

Those who choose to return to in-person classes will be required to wear face masks on school properties, including buildings and buses. However, masks will not be required while eating, drinking or spending time outside.

Indoors, people will be required to maintain a three-feet social distance.

Posley said that classrooms and other common areas will be equipped with HEPA filters. Posley said every school will bring on more cleaning staff and "high-contact areas" will be cleaned multiple times a day.

"I want all students, families, and staff to feel confident about a safe return to classrooms this fall," the superintendent said.

The letter also said MPS will resume athletic programming. High schoolers can now register for fall sports here. Those playing outdoor sports will not be required to wear a mask. Students who play indoor sports will not be required to wear masks while competing but will need to mask up when they are sitting on the sidelines or otherwise not actively competing.

In addition to sports, MPS will again open both before and after-school programming

MPS said they encourage all families in their community to be vaccinated to protect against COVID-19.

Posley said that school buildings will be open to the public and if families would like to schedule a visit to their child's school, they can contact the office to do so.
