OKAUCHEE LAKE, Wis. — Many people in Wisconsin have fond memories of chasing after the ice cream truck as a kid, but docking next to an ice cream boat is something most of us have not experienced. However, on Okauchee Lake in Waukesha County, boaters have the chance to do just that.

Earlier this month, the Pops on the Lake ice cream boat made its debut. Operating out of a 35-year-old pontoon boat, three extended family members have come together to sell ice cream treats out of a generator-powered chest freezer. It's a concept that may seem simple, but it is completely new to the area lakes.

Ben Ricca, one of Pops on the Lake's co-founders, says the idea has taken off like wildfire.

“People are taking pictures nearby, putting that on social media, a lot of word of mouth being spread. Everybody I talk to says, 'that is such a brilliant idea,'” Ricca said.

Within minutes of heading out, boats start making their way for ice cream. Sometimes the Pops boat has been so busy they have two boats pulling up on each side of the vessel.

“We get a lot of positive feedback. Whether you are two years old or 82 years old everybody loves ice cream,” Ricca said.

All three family members have full-time jobs, but they say this makes for a wonderful and fun side hustle. If the success continues throughout the summer, they say they may consider expanding to other nearby lakes in future years.

Currently, the boat is on the water on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, though days and times vary. To learn when they plan to be on the water, you can visit their Facebook page.
