FORT ATKINSON, Wis.— Many communities all across Wisconsin hold ceremonies to honor those who have served over Memorial Day, however few date back 102 years.

That is the case in Fort Atkinson, where the high school has been hosting a Rock Day ceremony since 1919. The ceremony, held Friday morning, serves a dual purpose.

It honors those from the community that have made the ultimate sacrifice to their country through military service. Flags are placed for each of the 46 people being honored.

Plus, the community honors graduating Fort Atkinson High School seniors who are about to enter the military, like Alexis Jacobson. She's one of seven students from the high school that will join the military after graduation.

Jacobson, who plans to enter the Army National Guard, says getting to take part in the ceremony is a powerful experience.

“It was a really special moment to be a part of something like this,” says Jacobson. “It just felt really special and I know a lot of people are looking up to all of us and are excited for our journey.”

For Principal Dan Halversen, getting to have his school continue to carry on the Rock Day tradition for more than a century means a lot.

“It means a lot of pride, being able and having the ability to participate in something of this magnitude,” says Halversen.
