RACINE, Wis. — Monday was an unusual day for students at Red Apple Elementary in Racine as kids put down the paper and pencils in order to experience something most school kids will never have the chance to witness.
For the past month and a half students and staff at the school have been collecting cereal boxes to donate to a variety of local food banks and shelters. After surpassing their goal, the school decided they would find a way to celebrate in style. Staff and students set up a giant domino course using the 2,300 boxes of cereal they collected.
The maze wound all through the school, eventually ending up in the gym.
For students who have been helping with the design, it was a moment of excited anticipation.
“It was fun, but also kinda nerve-racking. You didn’t know if there would be an error, you wanted to get it going smoothly,” says fourth grader Braden Rodriguez.
For staff, it was a chance to teach students multiple lessons. Teacher Susanne Kelly-Johnson helped to coordinate the domino maze as well as the collection drive.
“We are a STEAM school so having them learn about the spacing of boxes, how many boxes would be needed throughout the hallway in certain sections. It was fun and adventurous,” says Kelly-Johnson.
Now that the domino maze has been completed, the cereal will be distributed to numerous organizations around the area including the Racine County Food Bank.
