MILWAUKEE, Wis. (SPECTRUM NEWS) -- For nearly a year now, most live performances across Wisconsin have been sidelined by the spread of Covid-19, but the Milwaukee Opera Theatre has worked to keep performers and its audience connected through what they call their "Zoom Zoirèe."
"[The goal was] to create a piece inspired by the idea of distance that could be recorded, rehearsed and produced online," Jill Anna Ponasik, Artistic Director for the Milwaukee Opera Theatre told Spectrum News 1. "That's the "nugget" that it began with and then they took those ideas and ran with them."
Over the past two months, the Milwaukee Opera Theatre has commissioned two separate works through what they call The Distance Commissions, giving local artists the chance to interpret the idea of distance-- something we've all become all too familiar with during the pandemic-- into performance art.
Featured in February? Milwaukee-based cello and violin duo Monique and Chauntee Ross, best known as SistaStrings.
"We wanted to do something different than what we usually do, so we thought we'd utilize the theater with the choir, so we had one song we'd started on with a choir and decided that's the one we're going to finish it out with," Chauntee Ross told Spectrum News 1.
Beyond creating the musical piece itself, they took part in a music video production shoot which incorporated puppets, all for an unforgettable experience both for the performers and for the audience.
Simply hearing the piece recorded and played back for the first time is an experience Monqiue Ross won't soon forget.
"I loved listening to it in my car, so I was leaving my house on my way to my sister's house-- I had the mix plugged in and I was on the freeway and halfway through, I'm literally dancing and singing in the car," Monique Ross laughed. "I called my sister screaming, "Chauntee, oh my gosh, I love the beats!"-- that was the moment for me."
As of Friday night, tickets were still available to Saturday evening's Zoom Zoirèe with SistaStrings.
They were planning to release the entire video to the public after this weekend.
