Packers' quarterback Aaron Rodgers has been named the NFL's Most Valuable Player by the Associated Press for the third time. The announcement was made during Saturday night's NFL Honors program.
Rodgers joins select company in winning his third MVP. Peyton Manning won five.
The others to win three: Brett Favre -- who won three straight in the mid-1990's -- Tom Brady, Jim Brown and Johnny Unitas.
In his taped acceptance speech, Rodgers said he'd gotten engaged over the past year. He did not name the fiancé.
"It's an honor to win this award for the third time," said Rodgers. "2020 was definitely a crazy year, filled with lots of change, growth, some amazing memorable moments, 180 straight days of having my nose hair scraped and playing for very little fans the entire season. I got engaged and I played some of the best football in my career. I'd like to thank first and foremost my teammates for their support, their inspiration, protection, incredible play on the field. The coaching staff for their efforts to make this thing fun every single week. The energy and positivity in the daily presentations really kept us going."
Now 37, Rodgers was brilliant in 2020. He threw 48 touchdown passes with just five interceptions. He completed almost 71 percent of his passes on the way to throwing for 4,299 yards.
The last part of his acceptance speech was a message to fans.
"I just encourage people to read books, to meditate, speak things to life, manifest desires of your heart, question everything and spread love and positivity. Thank you so much. Peace and love. Good night."
Also Saturday night, it was made official that former Packers' defensive back Charles Woodson has made the Pro Football Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. He was emotional with his family when David Baker of the Hall informed him.
Through tears, Wilson said, "we're in the Hall. We're in the Hall, man. This is unbelievable."
Woodson becomes the 27th member of the Packers to make the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He played seven years of his career in Green Bay after being signed as a free agent in 2006. He helped the Packers win a Super Bowl after the 2010 season and went to the Pro Bowl four times. Woodson was the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2009, joining Reggie White as the only Packers to win the award.
Former Wisconsin Badgers quarterback Russell Wilson of the Seattle Seahawks won the Walter Payton NFL Man Of The Year award.
