BARABOO, Wis. — Thanks to community kindness, grants, and contributions, Baraboo now boasts Sauk County's only homeless shelter.
An old memory care facility able to house a dozen at-risk homeless individuals at a time. Rev. Dave Mowers said once Covid is over, Pathway Home can hold up to 35 people. He said the center will offer beds, meals and dedicated wrap around services. What’s unique is this shelter will also take families and won’t split them up.
"They are able to be secured at night. And so, that's where any children that are staying within the shelter will stay," Rev. Mowers said while showing off a wing that can be locked off. "And that does enable us to be creative with how we're with our families and certainly we do want to keep families together.”
$130,000 worth of renovations and donations involved in bringing this dream to a reality, one the community desperately needed after other agencies closed.
"We've really found a niche nobody else is doing this here," Rev. Mowers said. "There's nothing in Sauk County and we estimate 80 to 100 homeless folks at any given time in the county.”
Presently, Pathway Home will operate without a warming kitchen. With community support cold meals and a meal train will feed those at the center, but if you'd like to help with the kitchen or the completion of the project, donations can be made here:
