MILWAUKEE— The COVID-19 pandemic has changed plenty of traditions in 2020, and unfortunately many holiday traditions will not be spared. However, one that Wisconsin-favorite, which folks have counted on for nine decades, will carry on.

Distribution of the 2020 WE Energies Cookie Book will begin Nov. 4. While WE Energies has had to make some changes to the book this year, spokesperson Amy Jahns says they knew they wanted to keep it going.

“We kept an eye on everything. What we decided is we wanted to move forward, wanted to give people that normalcy they have every year, and we put together a really fantastic book for them," says Jahns.

Usually, the book relies on home-baker submissions; however, this year social distancing has made testing the recipe submissions difficult. As a result, WE Energies turned to professional bakers, restaurants, and caterers to submit recipes instead.

Adija Smith, owner of Confectionatly Yours bakery in Milwaukee, submitted a recipe for salted pecan bourbon cookies. Her recipe was is not only featured in the book, but her cookies made their way on the cover.

This means a lot to Smith. In fact, she grew up reading the book, so it's a full-circle moment for her.

“Getting the cookie book growing up was my first gift of the season. This was a big deal for me. To be able to show my children and hopefully grandchildren down the line that I was not only featured in the book but on the cover is far beyond what I even expected. I am extremely honored," says Smith.

WE Energies will hold numerous book distribution events around the state starting November 4th. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s events will be drive-through only and will not feature the usual walk-up family activities. People coming to pick up a book are asked to wear masks. A copy of the cookie book will also be available in PDF form on the WE Energies website after Nov. 4.
