MILWAUKEE— The Board of Commissioners of the Milwaukee Fire and Police Commission announced on Thursday that they have narrowed down the search for the next Milwaukee police chief.
They have three finalists: Malik Aziz, Chris Davis and Hoyt Mahaley.
“This is one of the most important positions in the City of Milwaukee, and the Board of Commissioners have identified three finalists who are most qualified to lead this critical agency during these pivotal times,” said FPC executive director Griselda Aldrete. “Each finalist will participate in a public and rigorous community engagement process, which will be instrumental in the final hiring decision.”
Aziz, a Dallas police major, is currently serving as the executive director of the National Black Police Association. Aziz is also an instructor in criminal justice police leadership at DeSales University.
Davis, deputy chief for the Portland police bureau, has previously headed up youth services and traffic divisions.
Mahaley, FBI supervisory special agent, is a former Milwaukee police officer who attended Rufus King High School.
The board has interviewed six candidates privately. The three finalists will now undergo additional interviews from the board and community stakeholders during community forums. According to a press release, candidates' years of law enforcement experience, education level, leadership experience, management experience and ability to build relationships with "diverse community stakeholders" were all contributing factors in selecting the finalists.
Michael Brunson is currently serving as the acting chief until a new one is hired. The vacancy was left after former chief Alfonso Morales retired. He was demoted from his position and is currently taking legal action.
A new police chief will be announced in December.
