MADISON, Wis. (SPECTRUM NEWS) — When Julia Nunes was 10 she met 'Alice in Dairyland' in her home area of Chippewa County. She's wanted to be in the position ever since.

“She's always been a huge role model for me, and this year I was old enough to submit an application and I still feel a little bit tingly that I'm Alice in Dairyland, but it's been a crazy adventure so far and I can't wait for the year ahead of me,” Nunes said.

This will be a different task for Nunes than most Alices. Her primary job of promoting Wisconsin agriculture will be modified under the pandemic, featuring more virtual work than years past.

The pandemic has also cancelled most Wisconsin State Fair activities. However, Starting Thursday there will be a Fair Food Drive-Thru.

Nunes is promoting a Wisconsin Products Pavilion Box.

“It's kind of a bummer we won't be able to walk through and experience that, but there is still a way to experience the fair and celebrate fair season with the Wisconsin products pavilion box,” Nunes said.

The box is full of Wisconsin products from maple syrup to brats, and even cream puff flavored coffee. You can order a box online: https://wistatefair.com/fair/wisconsin-products-pavilion-box/

Some of the drive thru stops feature more Wisconsin products. For example the first week will feature Wisconsin Pork Producers.

“This is a big function for us because it helps us raise funds for our programs that we do throughout the year, so without that we don't have the promotion of pork and we don't have the funds,” said Keri Retallick, vice president of Wisconsin Pork Producers Association.

The association is selling food items like sandwiches featuring Wisconsin pork, but also selling pork packages as part of the fair drive through. You can order one online or donate one to a local food bank: https://www.wppa.org/porkschoppe/

“It's really nice because you get some roast, you get some pork chops, you get some ground pork and some brats as well, so it's a great opportunity to get some pork for your freezer,” Retallick said.

Retallick said the extra exposure and sales will help pork producers still struggling to find processors for pigs during the pandemic.

“We're just trying to promote our products and have an opportunity to give people some great pork,” she said.

The Fair Food Drive-Thru will feature more Wisconsin products and trade groups over the next few weeks, something the newest spokesperson for Wisconsin agriculture is happy to see.

“I encourage everyone to get out there because buying Wisconsin products supports farmers and contributes to the economic strength of Wisconsin communities,” Nunes said.

Cars will enter at Gate 9 off of 76th Street & W. Pierce Avenue. The one-way traffic will wind through the Milwaukee Mile and State Fair Park. When you see a vendor you like, pull off to the vendor area to order and get your food. Once your family has their fill of food and drinks, cars will be directed to exit State Fair Park in order to enjoy meals at home. Organizers ask for your patience since this is the first time they have every tried this.
