MILWAUKEE (SPECTRUM NEWS) — A Milwaukee based student and teacher resource company recently put out a survey for teachers to find out their reactions to the new Wisconsin education guidelines.

After the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction released possible school guidelines last week, Fiveable, a Milwaukee based social learning network for high schoolers and teachers, put out a survey to see how teachers felt.

“Essentially the findings were, that the things that they were most concerned about, rightfully so was their health, for them for their students and for their students' families,” Founder and CEO of Fiveable, Amanda DoAmaral said.

After being a teacher herself, DoAmaral said it was important to her to see how teachers across the U.S. were feeling about guidelines that were coming out.

“I think the concern is that there are a lot of options that are being discussed but there aren’t a lot of decisions being made, and so teachers tend to spend a lot of time during the summer thinking, planning, restructuring ideas. So I think the concern right now is they don’t know what is going to happen,” DoAmaral said.

And with uncertainty, comes concerns. In their survey of 250 teachers, they found that 47 percent are concerned about personally being exposed to the virus or exposing their students. Meanwhile, 16 percent say their concern is ensuring their classroom meets the CDC’s social distancing recommendations.

Overall, Fiveable says it appears teachers are in favor of a hybrid approach where students will be in the class and learning from home. But some say they have concerns they won't have enough time to plan for whatever approach comes their way.

“If I was teaching next fall I would want to know now because I would want to think through, really research what are other people doing, understand the trends, and restructure my lessons in a way that would support my students,” DoAmaral said.

In the meantime, teachers will have to gear up for whatever comes their way this school year.
