MILWAUKEE, Wis. (SPECTRUM NEWS) -- Ask anyone in Wisconsin what their favorite beer is and you're likely to get a variety of answers, but ask magazine The Growler what the most important beer is to the history of Wisconsin, and they'll give you just one.

In a new column titled, "The 12 Most Important Beers in Wisconsin Brewing History: A 12-Pack of Leaders & Legends," writer Doug Hoverson set out to find the Wisconsin beer that has "stood the test of time, advanced the industry, and became important economic and cultural touchstones."

Hoverson ranked them as follows:

12.     Dunkel Weizen, Hibernia Brewing Co. (Eau Claire)

11.     Wisconsin Belgian Red, New Glarus Brewing Co. (New Glarus)

10.     Augsburger, Huber Brewing Co. (Monroe) 

9.       Old Milwaukee, Jos. Schlitz Brewing Co. (Milwaukee)

8.       Schlitz Malt Liquor, Jos. Schlitz Brewing Co. (Milwaukee)

7.       Leinenkugel Bock, Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Co. (Chippewa Falls)

6.       Old Style, G. Heileman Brewing Co. (La Crosse)

5.       Point Special, Stevens Point Brewery (Stevens Point)

4.       Spotted Cow, New Glarus Brewing Co. (New Glarus)

3.       Schlitz Lager, Jos. Schlitz Brewing Co. (Milwaukee)

2.       Lite Beer from Miller (aka Miller Lite), Miller Brewing Co. (Milwaukee)

1.       Pabst Blue Ribbon, Pabst Brewing Co. (Milwaukee)

While not ranked in the Top 12, Miller High Life did receive an honorable mention for "management’s success at reinventing the beer periodically."
