WAUKESHA COUNTY, Wis. (SPECTRUM NEWS) - Each year there are thousands of vehicle accidents involving deer across the state of Wisconsin. While crashes occour all year round, peak season comes in October and November.

According to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources there were 19,899 vehicle crashes reported involving deer in 2017. The actual number is likely much higher because many accidents don't get reported. With mating season in full swing, deer are more likely to dart across roadways. While many think to use extra caution only on rural roads, staff with Wisconsin State Patrol say suburban areas and interstates are by no means immune. It is something that is seen in Waukesha County, which has one of the highest deer crash rates in Wisconsin.

“We do have a lot of deer crashes in urban areas on the interstate. We are seeing more in the Brookfield area, Waukesha County has a mix of rural areas, urban interstate, basically have the best of all worlds as far as environment so we do see a spike in auto-deer crashes this time of year.” says Trooper Nicholas Lorenzen

Auto collision shops say they see increased business from deer crashes. Marshall Auto Body in Waukesha predicts they will repair between 20 and 30 vehicles that have been involved in deer collisions this month.
