MADISON (SPECTRUM NEWS) — Inside a massive non-descript building on Madison’s east side, preservation takes centerstage.
‘It’s a $47 million facility built by the state for the Wisconsin Veteran’s Museum,’ Museum Director Michael Telzrow said.
The space is also a site for state records and historic film, but 180 thousand square feet belongs to the museum for safekeeping some of histories most important pieces.
‘It’s kind of like Fort Knox,’ Telzrow said describing the several layers of security to get into the area and then the temperature and humidity controlled space for the items.
‘You have organic, non organic materials..and all have their own needs,’ he said.
Since Spring of 2018, the museum has been making the move from the basement of their building into the new facility.
‘It was a job to move 26,000 artifacts, you have to inventory, you have to pack safely, so it’s a big big job,’ he said of the effort.
Telzrow says having the collection inside the space relieves a great deal of concern over the safeguarding of the relics.
‘We sleep a little better with it all at night here.’
