MILWAUKEE, Wis. (SPECTRUM NEWS) -- Milwaukee natives DJ Hines and his little girl Chloe inspired “Hair Love,” a short animated film that took home an Oscar Sunday night.
Hines decided to give a go at his daughter’s hair five years ago and the video went viral. After trying to do a ponytail for 20 minutes, he finally achieved the goal. That is until the rubber band popped, her hair flung out and it was back to the drawing board.
“We sent it off to America’s Funniest Videos and the rest is history,” Hines said.
With millions of views, the video was even featured on Ellen. Eventually, Matthew Cherry and Karen Toliver created a Sony Pictures animation inspired by this video titled “Hair Love.”
Cherry sent a tweet out saying the film was really inspiring and Hines actually got an opportunity to talk to him.
“We wanted to normalize black hair. There’s a very important issue that is there and it’s the Crown Act,” Cherry said.
The Crown Act stands for Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair. This act protects any discrimination based on hair texture and protective styles, according to CNN.
Hines believes the Oscar-win will keep this conversation going and it is an issue he is happy to stand behind. It is not only a win for his family but the millions of people who got a laugh out of a struggle.
“Hair is a huge part of our culture, it’s a huge part of how we express ourselves. Any individual should be able to wear their hair without being discriminated. The conversation lets me know we have a lot more work to do as a society when we’re questioning if people can wear their natural hair,” Hines said.
