Suamico, Wis. (SPECTRUM NEWS)- Many farms and zoos in Wisconsin accept old Christmas trees, So, instead of tossing it out, consider donating it.  The animals love to play with the trees and eat them.

"We do have to check through them carefully to make sure there are no leftover ornament hooks, or wires or anything that could be dangerous to the animals," says Carmen Murach, Curator of Animals at the Northeastern Wisconsin Zoo.  "Here, there are very few animals out here who don't get some kind of enjoyment out of recycling the Christmas trees"

The NEW Zoo has been advertising for tree donations since Christmas Eve.  They are still accepting them.

"It's nice that they don't go to a landfill," says Murach.  "A lot of communities collect trees and take them to yard waste sights and chip them up which is another good option, but this way, they get used a couple of times."

Be sure to check first with the farms, or zoos closest to you to make sure they accept Christmas trees from outside sources.  The Milwaukee Zoo, for example, does not.
