Today’s Big Stories

1. Rep. Gallagher’s announcement to not seek re-election reflective of party shift

Up until last week, Wisconsin Rep. Mike Gallagher, R-Green Bay, was seen as part of the GOP's future. Today, he’s being viewed as part of its past. Last week, Rep. Gallagher was one of only three Republicans to initially vote against impeaching Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. A fourth congressman, Utah Rep. Blake Moore, vice chair of the House Republican Conference, changed his vote from a "yes" to a "no" so the measure could be considered again at a later date. Rep. Gallagher said policy disputes are not impeachable offenses.

2. Report: Number of licensed bus drivers in Wisconsin declining

new report from the Wisconsin Policy Forum showed the number of licensed bus drivers around Wisconsin has dropped 17.7% over the last 15 years. This has created numerous problems for school districts around the state and the families they serve.

3. AAA: Wisconsin gas prices up by nearly $0.30/gallon in a week

The price at the pump in Wisconsin is on the upswing again, with AAA estimating that gas prices have climbed statewide by nearly $0.30/gallon over the past week. "The refinery in Whiting, Indiana — there was a power outage so the refinery shut down," said Molly Hart with AAA. "That can cause the price at the pump to go up."

4. Rock County community steps up to help tornado victims

Residents are stepping up to help one another after tornadoes hit Rock County last week. One fire department said it has received so much support, it now has to turn down supply donations.

5. Trump appears in federal court for hearing in classified documents case

In the latest mixing of court appearances into Trump's election-season calendar, supporters with signs and flags assembled outside a courthouse barricade as a Trump campaign message to allies with the subject line of “I'm in court. Again!” warned that unspecified opponents “want me arrested” and “erased from the ballot.” The message reinforced his team's strategy of politicizing his four criminal prosecutions, including in Florida, where he faces dozens of felony counts accusing him of hoarding highly classified records at his Mar-a-Lago estate and obstructing FBI efforts to get them back.

West De Pere student helps students learn a valuable lesson in finance

One in five people between the ages of 18 and 24 have an unpaid debt that was sent to a third party for collections, according to the Urban Institute. Now there is a push to make sure young adults are educated on sound financial practices before leaving school.

A northeastern Wisconsin student was part of the push to make that happen.
