Today's Big Stories
1. Sheriff: Wisconsin casino shooter was fired employee
A man who shot and killed two people and wounded a third at a northeastern Wisconsin tribal casino restaurant before police killed him had been fired from the eatery and banned from the property, authorities said Monday. The 62-year-old attacker walked into the Duck Creek Kitchen and Bar on Saturday and shot two people at a waiter station at close range with a 9 mm handgun.
2. “Step by step”: Patients and providers tackle long-haul COVID-19 cases, one day at a time
Seven months after Cynthia, a 27-year-old Milwaukee resident, was diagnosed with COVID-19 in September, she is still struggling with the virus’s lasting effects, including fatigue, chest pain and a heart condition known as pericarditis, an inflammation in the tissue around the heart. But, as cases like Cynthia’s have shown, surviving an infection doesn’t always equal getting back to normal.
3. Progress Center for Black Women opens Financial Health Academy enrollment
A Dane County non-profit serving Black women and their families is starting something new: a six-week "Financial Health Academy." The Progress Center for Black Women’s Founder Sabrina Madison plans to enroll 10 Black women and their families in a new pilot course that gives them a chance to learn how to save and budget.
4. Novavax expands COVID vaccine trial to kids ages 12-17
Maryland-based company Novavax announced Monday that it has expanded its late-stage trial on its COVID-19 vaccine to include adolescents between the ages of 12-17, another step forward in the race to vaccinate children against the coronavirus. In a recent U.K. trial, Novavax's COVID-19 vaccine was over 96% effective against the original COVID-19 strain, as well as 86% effective against the variant first detected in the United Kingdom, known as B.1.1.7
Despite experiencing severe symptoms of COVID-19, including hospitalization, some remain skeptical of the vaccine and do not plan to get vaccinated. Our partners at Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service interviewed three people who say they will skip the shot due to concerns about possible side effects of the vaccine, the speed with which the research and testing of the vaccine were conducted as well as the United States’ “brutal” history with medical testing on Black people.
