WISCONSIN (SPECTRUM NEWS) -- Marquette University Law School’s most recent poll shows Joe Biden leading President Trump, 49 percent to 41 percent.  This is out of a pool of 805 Wisconsin voters polled from June 14 to June 18.

“That’s a notable movement when national polling has seen movement in Biden’s direction and coming at the end of two months where the majority of the news has been difficult for President Trump,” says Marquette’s Charles Franklin.

The poll comes at a historic time in the nation, during an unprecedented pandemic and widespread civil unrest.  Biden’s approval rating jumped 8% compared to this same poll in May.

Trump’s job approval rating, according to the poll, has steadily decreased since February. He now has a 45 percent approval rating from Wisconsin voters, compared to 51 percent who disapprove.

“Republicans aren’t quite as united behind trump as they had been and Democrats are a little more united in opposition to him,” Franklin says.  “Independents, who had given a majority of their support to President Trump a month ago, are now giving a plurality of their support to Biden.”

Economy and job creation has been a strength for Trump through his presidency.  Of the Wisconsinites polled this month, 50 percent approve of how he is handling the nation’s economy.  That has dropped 4% from May.

Franklin adds that this data could change as the months progress.

“I think we make a mistake in being too quick to take today’s reading and extrapolate it out to November, as opposed to understanding why we are where we are today,” Franklin says.  “I think the fact that President Trump’s approval on the economy and on handling protests is not really helping him, hurting him on protests and not helping him as much on the economy, are important points to note.”

Protests have continued across the nation and Wisconsin, after George Floyd’s murder almost one month ago.  With regard to how President Trump has handled protests, only 30 percent of Wisconsinites polled approve.  58 percent disapprove.

The majority of voters polled approve of the protesting in general.  61 percent to only 36 percent who disapprove.  59 percent support the Black Lives Matter movement.  72 percent support police.

Governor Tony Evers has seen his approval rating fall since last month.  He now sits at a 54 percent approval rating, compared to 59 percent in May.  His disapproval rating has grown from 33 percent in May to now 38 percent.
