MADISON, Wis. — A new report detailing the months-long, here-and-there closure of Madison's State Street to vehicles to create a pseudo pop-up pedestrian mall near the State Capitol building last year was released this week. The report detailed what worked and what could work again in the future.
"Overall, we found that it was very well received," Jaymes Langrehr, public information officer for Madison's Department of Planning, Community and Economic Development, said. "Eighty-four percent of people who took a survey down at the pedestrian mall said they either liked or loved the pedestrian mall and 81% said the pedestrian mall being there made them want to come down and visit State Street."
The survey also showed that reaction was slightly mixed among area business owners, with 20% saying they didn’t like it, 40% saying it was okay and 40% saying they liked or loved it.
However, it's unclear what may come next for the pop-up pedestrian mall.
"The council initially authorized this experiment for one year, for 2024," Langrehr said. "It's not in the budget for 2025, but we do have all these materials on hand from last year that we intend to put out again this summer."
