WISCONSIN — Multiple executive orders signed by President Joe Biden on his first day in office were related to immigration and border security.

One of those signatures will preserve the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, something former President Donald Trump was working to undo. The program allows “Dreamers,” young undocumented immigrants, to apply for temporary deportation deferments and work permits that can be renewed every two years.

DACA recipient and a collaborator with Voces de la Frontera, Luis Velasquez, said he's relieved to know his future in the U.S. is a little more secure.

“You know we have doctors, we have nurses, we have essential workers who are DACA applicants," Luis said. "We lived in fear again, we had finally been able to have this sense of stability. We have jobs, you know, we're contributing to society and now again, this fear, anxiety, ambiguity."

President Biden's executive order to preserve the DACA program will keep it running until Congress passes legislation allowing dreamers to apply for permanent legal status.
