MADISON, Wis. — A team of volunteer veterans say they can no longer stand by and watch the Wisconsin Veterans Museum every night be tagged by graffiti tied to the unrest.

So, a small clean-up crew every morning for the past eight days now made it their mission in Downtown Madison to paint over the words, profanities, and images.

"It's not a matter of what's on there. We don't want anything on there. We don't want anything defacing the honor and the integrity of this building," Purple Heart recipient Jason Johns said. "You wouldn't do this the Vietnam War Memorial, you wouldn't do it to a war memorial in your hometown, right? So, this that's what this is to us," he added.

Wounded Warrior BJ Ganem proudly paints over the plywood. He says it is his way to protect his story and his fellow service members' patriotic pasts.

"There's nothing evil in this museum. There's nothing but freedom fighters in there and these are good people of all different backgrounds," Ganem said.

Meanwhile, a new GoFundMe page hopes to help the vets pay for the cost of the expensive professional-grade paint needed for the special job.

Johns hopes the tagging stops because he believes it is a sacred space.

"We're just asking them [the taggers] to skip over this one out of respect for you know what the stories are told in there. What this museum represents is the fact that every story in there was a story that helped defend the right for them to peacefully assemble, to have civil disobedience, to speak their message when they have to," Johns said. "Leave this building alone," he said.
