MILWAUKEE (SPECTRUM NEWS) — Empowered, safe, seen: these three words are not typically used to describe a weekly, two-mile run.
However, this is how organizers from the Milwaukee-based group, “Forget Everything and Run,” or F.E.A.R., wants those who join in for a run to feel. FEAR’s goal is to provide a safe space for runners of color. The group is modeled after a national initiative and was formed six years ago in the city.
Even through the COVID-19 pandemic, groups have reduced in size with virtual warm ups, FEAR organizers say the group is being embraced by runners around Wisconsin, at now 40 runners strong.
At times FEAR is joined by state leaders like Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes. While organizers say it’s goal back then was to encourage Black and brown men and women to care about their health and wellness, in today’s climate of injustice, that mission remains, but safety is now a major priority.
“With the shooting and murder of Ahmaud Arbery in this time and climate we definitely want to protect our people of color and make sure they feel safe and to make sure they have a home here and are welcome to run anywhere in Milwaukee,” said lead organizer Tenia Fisher.
Multiple FEAR groups meet up twice a week, running or jogging anywhere from two to seven miles at area locations like Atwater Park.
Anyone across Wisconsin is invited to run weekly. To keep up with events and virtual warm-ups, visit FEAR MKE on Instagram or Twitter.
