WAUKESHA, Wisc., (SPECTRUM NEWS) -- This most recent heatwave has Wisconsin hard and it’s taking a toll on the state’s roads.

The Waukesha County Highway crew fixed five buckles in less than 12 hours Monday night into Tuesday morning.

“We’ve been working nights and days trying to get them all cleaned up so traffic can keep rolling,” says superintendent Jon Bax.  “The concrete is probably 100 to 110 degrees even though it’s 90 out and that concrete expands. You’ve got an expansion joint but once that’s tight, it’s coming up.”

Wisconsin DOT reports more than 100 road buckles this year. 25 of them have happened since Saturday.

“It is a statewide issue that we’re seeing an uptick in buckling,” says Wisconsin DOT’s Barry Paye. “Our maintenance crews with our county highway maintenance department have been doing a lot of work these past couple days to keep up.”

Paye and Bax reiterate the importance of safe, alert driving. They say these buckles can happen at any moment.

“If you see a buckle in the road and you’ll see that concrete sprawled out on the surface and if it’s a really bad buckle, you’ll see large chunks of concrete out on top of the road,” Paye says.  “Slow down and try to drive around it because you don’t want to drive over it and cause damage to your car.”

A driver’s next task is to report it by calling 911.

“They’ll dispatch us out, or Waukesha County Highway, if it’s during hours,” Bax says.

Bax and Paye want to remind drivers to slow down and move over for road crews, so they can safely do their job.
