WAUKESHA, Wis. (SPECTRUM NEWS) — Twin, seven-year-old girls made a big donation on their birthday.
The power of giving changes lives all over, and here, that gift came from two young girls.
A typical seven-year-old birthday party consists of games, toys and a whole lot of fun. However, two twin girls did something a little different on their birthday that was something truly special.
"Our envelope that we gave to our friends says we are going to have a painting party, and we don't need presents," said seven-year-old Paige Salas.
What do you mean, no presents for their birthday? Well, that’s exactly what Paige and Sophia Salas asked for from their friends.
"We have enough toys already," seven-year-old Sophia Salas said.
However, what they asked their friends to bring to their birthday party instead may surprise you or even inspire you.
"We had enough toys for our next birthday we just wanted to donate some things for the pets," Paige Salas said.
A simple request, the girls asked for pet supplies for their furry friends at a local shelter in Waukesha.
"They asked their friends to pick some items that were fun and special to them to donate to the animal shelter," twin's mother Jenna Viso said.
Viso says seeing these two girls give up something that can be so valuable to any seven-year-old brought tears to her eyes.
"It’s really a proud moment to see that they are willing to forgo that more tangible thing that the can see and play with versus give back to the little furry friends that we admire so much," Viso said.
Both Sophia and Paige say they decided to give back because they know the animals at HAWS in Waukesha are in need.
“So we can help the pets who don't have a home," Paige Salas said.
"We wanted to help out with the humane society," Sophia Salas said.
However, there is another twist. This isn't the first time these two have decided to give back on their birthday. They made a big donation when they were just six-years-old. The reason they continue to give back is simple.
"So the new pets have toys and food to eat and play with," Paige Salas said.
Very special words spoken from the mouths of two young girls are making an impact on hundreds of animals and the employees who work at HAWS.
"We have these wonderful girls who really do understand what it's like to have empathy and compassion for animals and put something before themselves," HAWS Director or Organizational Development Maggie Techtmann said.
It’s a tradition these girls plan to continue for years to come.
