MIDDLETON, Wis. (SPECTRUM NEWS) -- One gourmet chocolate shop in Middleton is attracting national attention for its' great tasting but really gross looking dessert.

‘In a place like Chocolaterian, you have to have a great chocolate-chip cookie,' Chocolaterian Founder Leanne Cordisco said.  Seven years ago, Cordiso knew she was in the dough when customers started to rave about her 'ugly cookie'.

‘If I can get someone to say 'oh, I hate you' when they’re eating that cookie, then I’ve done my job well,’ she laughed.

This wasn't some half-baked cookie idea, it was so ugly, Cordisco couldn't call it anything else.

‘We kept trying to make the cookie look pretty and every iteration of the cookie, it kept tasting better and looking worse,' she said. Believe it or not, the confectioner came up with the ugly cookie by thinking about ketchup.

‘It was in learning about the chemistry of ketchup,' she said.  'It made me think about how when I was putting this cookie together how I wanted it to have the sweet and bitter and salty and umami in it, because the more hooks it has, the more you’re gonna want it,' she added.

Each ugly cookie oozes burnt cartelized toffee, while salted pistachios, oats, bitter cocoa nibs and a bunch of butter make the ugly cookie something to really chew on.

It's. why the 3 ounce monstrosity is the Chocolaterian's most popular menu item, mail ordered now coast to coast.

‘The ugly cookie ships everywhere…and I think we have sent to all 48 continuous states,' she said.

Recently, the cookie received the blessing of the Big Ten Network, calling it a desert that doesn't disappoint.
